Snowman Jhochhe. Operating continuously since 1968, this is the only original Freak St pie shop still going, and it?s got a kind of cool that doesn?t go out of fashion. The apple crumble and chocolate cakes are great, but the atmosphere?s the real attraction. Cakes Rs50?60 per slice.

Five-star dining If you can?t afford to stay in one of Kathmandu?s five-star hotels, the next best thing is to have dinner in one: for not much more than the cost of a meal at a good Thamel restaurant, you?ll have an experience unavailable back home at almost any price. The best of he hotel restaurants offer sumptuous food, unusual specialities, opulent decor, over-the-top service and music and/or dance performances. For peace of mind, it?s worth booking and dressing up a bit if you plan to visit these restaurants, though neither is essential. The Yak & Yeti?s (01/424 8999) Chimney was founded by Boris Lissanevitch, the legendary Russian adventurer who opened Kathmandu?s first hotel in the 1950s, and preserves his memory with dishes like chicken Kiev and baked Alaska. At the Soaltee Crowne Plaza (01/427 3999), once the palace of Prince Basundhara, Kakori self-consciously apes the style and cuisine of the Nawabs of Lucknow in North India. At Hotel de l?Annapurna?s (01/422 1711) Ghar-e-Kebab the kitchen is partially open, so you can watch the chefs prepare your North Indian meal first-hand. Dwarika?s (01/447 9488) goes the whole hog with Krishnarpan: the tables are made of antique latticework, and the excellent Nepali food (some meals run to 22 courses) is served on traditional tableware. Finally, the Everest Hotel?s (01/478 0100) Far Pavilions serves Mughal food with fine views of the city from its seventh-floor windows. Expect to pay around Rs900 upwards for a meal at any of these.
