The Rough Guide to Ireland

Rough Guide to...
The centre?s main subject, however, is seafaring in Ireland in the sixteenth century, in particular Grace O?Malley (Gráinne Ní Mháille, often corrupted to Granuaile; c.1530?1603), the formidable sea captain and pirate queen of Clare Island, who ruled the sea from Galway Bay to Donegal Bay.

Letterfrack and Connemara National Park The tiny, nineteenth-century Quaker village of LETTERFRACK, around 15km northeast of Clifden, is the unlikely site of the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, and plays host to two notable, long-standing festivals (www.ceecc.org), both featuring plenty of traditional music: Bog Week, celebrating the landscape with walking events at the end of May,

Outside town, the main set-piece tourist attraction, at Lettershea, 7km east on the N59, is Dan O?Hara?s Homestead and the Connemara Heritage and History Centre (April?Oct daily 10am?6pm, last admission 5pm; ?8; Heritage Island; www.connemaraheritage.com), which sounds rather kitsch but is actually very engaging. Fascinating display boards by local archeologist Michael Gibbons and a twenty-minute video introduce you to the history of Clifden and Connemara, and to Dan O?Hara himself. A tenant farmer whose house was famous for its ceilidhs, O?Hara was evicted in 1845 and eventually found his way to New York, where, having little English, he sold matches and inspired the famous eponymous song. Outside in the grounds, you can view reconstructions of an oratory, a dolmen tomb, a wooden ring fort and a crannóg, a thatched dwelling set in a small lake. If there are enough people around, you can take a guided tour in a tractor-borne bus up to Dan O?Hara?s refurbished cottage for great views south over the bogs and lakes to Roundstone and Errisbeg and for demonstrations that might include sheep-shearing, thatching and turf-cutting. There?s also a daytime café at the centre and B&B is available (095/21246; ?61?90/£41?60).

Mitchell?s Market St 095/21867. Probably Clifden?s best restaurant, providing well-judged and beautifully presented cuisine, heavily weighted towards fresh fish and seafood. Cheaper, simpler dishes available at lunchtime.

Loud and lively Mullarkey?s behind Foyles Hotel on Market Square (entrance on Church St) is the best spot for modern folk, blues, bluegrass and singer-songwriters.

Among the pubs, Mannion?s on Market Street is the best spot for food, serving soups, sandwiches and Irish stew with local lamb, all in hearty portions. There?s a more varied menu at Conneely?s opposite, a contemporary-style bar and night club on the other side of Market Street, but what really makes it stand out are the gorgeous views of the harbour from its rear balcony.

From the centre of the village, you can take on a very satisfying short walk to the summit of Errisbeg, which offers majestic views in all directions. Take the paved lane beside O?Dowd?s bar and follow the rough track that it turns into; you?ll have to pick your way over often boggy ground and boulders towards the top which, despite appearances from below, turns out to be a ridge of three summits ? with a little trial and error, you?ll find the one with the scenery you like best. On three sides runs a hopelessly indented coastline of white-sand beaches, where peninsulas are barely distinguishable from islands; to the north, set against one of the finest prospects of the Bens and the Turks, lies huge, sparse Roundstone Bog, one of the finest blanket bogs in the country, covered with a glittering crazy-paving of tiny lakes and crossed by a single narrow road.

Aughnanure boasts a frightening array of defensive features, including arrow slits aimed at the main staircase, secret prison chambers and a trap door in the hall above a subterranean river, through which were thrown guests who had outstayed their welcome.

Other likely bases are the pretty fishing village of Roundstone and Oughterard, an angler?s delight, not far out of Galway city on the lush banks of Lough Corrib. Oughterard has a good selection of visitor attractions, but the only really compelling historic sight in west Connemara is Kylemore Abbey and Gardens. Just off shore near here, you can sample easy-going island life on Inishbofin.

Richard Ellmann James Joyce; Oscar Wilde. Ellmann?s wonderful biography of Joyce is a literary masterpiece in its own right. His work on Wilde was, unfortunately, unfinished when he died, but is still an excellent insight into the work of this often misunderstood writer.

Colm Tóibín and Diarmaid Ferriter The Irish Famine: A Documentary. Highly readable and thought-provoking analysis of the Great Famine, which takes an incisive look at both the complex issues surrounding the failure of the potato crop, and the inadequacy of previous historical accounts of the crisis.

Tom Garvin Preventing the Future: Why Was Ireland So Poor for So Long? Perhaps the most important socio-historical analysis of postwar Ireland, not least in terms of the ?lost? decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Garvin offers not only an acute analysis of the rotten core of Irish social policy but a persuasive and often witty account of its impact upon future generations.

R.F. Foster Modern Ireland 1600?1972. The best history of the period, authoritative and comprehensive, though heavy going at times for the lay reader. In contrast, Luck and the Irish gambols entertainingly and insightfully through the period from 1970 to 2000, while The Irish Story: Telling Tales and Making It Up in Ireland is a provocative, witty deconstruction of myth-making and clichés in Ireland?s telling of its own history.

Historical novel, based on the true story of the nineteenth-century Irish courtesan, who became the richest woman in the world, and her adventures in Paraguay. In 2007, Enright?s The Gathering, a bleak, compelling tale of family dysfunction, won the Man Booker Prize.
