The 3-Season Diet: Eat the Way Nature Intended: Lose Weight, Beat Food Cravings, and Get Fit

John Douillard
The herb gymnema mentioned above would be perfect to enhance the beta cells in the pancreas to make insulin more efficiently. If the pancreas fails to make the insulin, the blood sugars rise uncontrollably and you become diabetic, needing insulin support. Prior to this, diet and lifestyle stress will also keep insulin unnaturally high. In time the cells become insulin-resistant and the body resists taking the glycogen into the cells. To counteract this I recommend another natural medicine called shilijit, or bitumen. This medicine has been shown to take the blood sugar into the cells and lower insulin resistance, and for this reason it has traditionally been used for diabetes, increasing energy, and fighting obesity. Take 1 or 2 capsules of shilijit after meals and 1 or 2 gymnema before meals. When combined, gymnema and shilijit can have a powerful impact on insulin-resistant weight problems. Once those are solved, the three-phase program should work like a charm.

INSULIN RESISTANCE Insulin, produced by the pancreas in response to the release of glucose in the bloodstream, carries the glucose to the body?s tissues either for use as energy or to be converted to fat for storage. When insulin levels are kept high over an extended period of time because of stress or an extended high-carb diet (the carbs break down ultimately to sugar), a condition called insulin resistance may result. While under stress, the adrenal glands produce cortisol and the body dumps all available glycogen or sugar into the blood. Insulin levels rise to get the blood into the cells. If the insulin levels stay high for too long, the cells cannot use all the sugar the stress is trying to force into the cell with high insulin levels. The cell will eventually block the insulin from driving any more sugar into it. The body soon starts to have difficulty digesting carbs at all?a situation called ?insulin resistance.? The pancreas has to keep making more insulin to get the sugar into the cells for energy. With this cellular insulin resistance, the body is getting a very strong message to store fat, make cholesterol, and crave more carbs. Does that sound familiar?

Consistently high insulin levels, often induced by constant mental, emotional, or physical stressors, will cause the body to store fat and raise cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is a sterol that is a precursor to cortisol and other degenerative, stress-fighting hormones. In an emergency the body says, ?Hold the fat! Make me some more cholesterol to replace the steroid hormones I?m using in this emergency!? This scenario has become all too common in America for many of the reasons we have already outlined. One herb has been shown to lower cholesterol levels as well as commercial Western drugs. It has no side effects?although it does offer a number of side benefits for healing skin irritations, arthritis, and other conditions. The herb is called comminphora mukul, or more commonly, guggul. It will lower cholesterol to normal levels, yet studies have shown that if taken continually it does not bring cholesterol levels below normal. Guggul seems to act by restoring homeostasis, or balance, to the entire body rather than only addressing symptoms.

Phase Three prompts the body to burn fat for energy, because just about the only thing your body will have available to burn from your midday meal until breakfast is fat. During this daily mini-fast, the body is forced into fat metabolism without responding to it as an emergency or survival situation. During Phases Two and Three, the pancreas produces glucagon, better known as the ?fasting hormone? (whereas insulin is ?the feasting hormone?). Glucagon, like insulin, is a pancreatic hormone; it responds to low blood sugar levels by mobilizing stored fat as fuel. When carb availability is low, the pancreas produces glucagon to release the stored fat as energy.

To offset hunger pangs, drink 8 ounces of water (1 glass) every hour or two from the lunch meal until bedtime. Don?t skip the water, because it serves an important function, helping to flush the excess fluids out of your system and filling your stomach to make you feel full. When you drink the water, you should try to drink a full 8-ounce glass at one time; don?t just sip it. And if you still feel a little empty at night, have a cup of herb tea with some honey.

If evening hunger persists, give more attention to how big your lunch was and how and when you ate it; try eating your lunch later?about 3:00 or 4:00 P.M.?and drink more water (8 ounces at one time).

If in the beginning you have difficulty making the transition to big lunches and light dinners, or find it impossible to make it to Phases Two and Three, take the herb gymnema sylvester, ½ teaspoon or 2 capsules before meals or as needed for hunger; it is available in most natural food stores. This herb is traditionally called the ?sugar destroyer,? because it helps the body metabolize fat as energy, stabilizes blood sugar levels, and cuts sugar cravings. Studies have shown that gymnema can increase the production of insulin in the beta cells of the pancreas in both Type I and Type II diabetes.

If you are not satisfied by soup, salad, or fruit for supper, then increase the size of your midday meal or eat it a little later. If you feel you need just a little something extra, however, try crumbling a few crackers in your soup, which would be a better choice for an evening carbohydrate than toast or bread. Yeasted breads will create more gas and bloating at nighttime,

Note: For supper in either Phase One, Two, or Three, about half an hour before your normal supper time, drink one or two 8-ounce glasses of water, even if supper is only a cup of herbal tea in Phase Three. Take 2 glasses for a larger frame and 1 or 2 for a smaller frame. This water will ensure that your hunger pains are not actually dehydration, and will help you get accurate hunger feedback from your body.

SUPPER Remember that supper has always been a supplemental rather than a main meal. To reeducate the body to burn fat as energy instead of craving sugar and breads, this is the crucial time of the day. Most important of all, the process must be effortless. If you strain to keep from eating, then the body?s emergency response will trigger cravings for more sugar (emergency fuel) and store the very fat you are trying to burn. While breakfast and lunch will remain fairly constant during your adjustment period, supper will progress from Phase One to Phase Three, but only if the process feels effortless. The goal of this program is to retrain the body to maintain its energy for a longer time by gradually decreasing the size of supper. When you can eat a large lunch and effortlessly make it through the evening without hunger, then the body will naturally and effortlessly be forced into burning its own fat for fuel. If you can maintain this diet for 2 to 4 weeks at a time, you can reset the body?s ability to use fat as a natural fuel supply. Unlike other weight-loss programs that starve the body for months on end, this program pushes the body into fat metabolism each day but feeds it before the body senses any starvation emergency.

LUNCH Make it the largest meal of the day. It should be a complete, large, and satisfying meal, for example: rice, chicken, vegetables, salad, soup, dessert, and herb tea. Resist the temptation to watch TV, open mail, drive your car, or talk on the phone while you eat. The thing to remember about this big lunch is that you?ve got to leave the table satisfied; otherwise you will crave satisfaction for the rest of the day. That?s why I suggest having a dessert, even if it?s only one piece of chocolate or a sweet at the end of the meal, so that you?re satisfied. You should sigh with contentment as you push away from the table. Then take 5 or 10 minutes to rest. If you feel drowsy after a big meal, lie down on your left side right after lunch for 5 or 10 minutes if you can. If that doesn?t work for you, then you may want to stimulate your digestive system before the meal. Slice a gingerroot into dime-size pieces, sprinkle a little lemon juice and salt over them, and chew 2 of those before and after every meal to stimulate your digestion. You can also take gingerroot and either juice it like a carrot or use a clove press to squeeze out the juice into a little cup. You can even grate the ginger and squeeze the juice out with cheesecloth. Then add twice the amount of honey to that ginger juice, a pinch of salt, and take a tablespoon of that mixture before and after every meal.

In nature, the best time to lose weight is during the spring, because of the natural low-fat diet it provides us. If we eat a seasonal low-fat diet during these months, the body will be forced to burn its own fat to get energy. This time of year is crucial to resetting the body?s system for metabolizing fat for energy so that, come summer, when all the high-sugar fruits are harvested, the body has established a baseline of fat metabolism to maintain stable blood sugar and energy levels. The best time of year to kick off my weight-balancing program is

most of the diets on the market today aim to manipulate the body to burn fat for fuel. If you are overweight and your body burns fat for energy, you will lose weight, that?s for certain. By restricting fats and/or carbohydrates, many popular fad diets virtually force your body to go to its fat stores for energy. Some other diet programs use stimulants to suppress the appetite, or diuretics to flush the system. Yet unless you succeed in resetting your body?s mechanism to burn fat on a steady basis, naturally and without starving it, you will simply gain back all the weight you have lost once you go off the diet

During the four hours following ?sunset? from 6:00 to 10:00 P.M. (the actual time of sunset will vary with the seasons, of course), the body reverts to spring mode. This marks the start of the second 12-hour cycle and is the second-best time to do physical exercise. If you?ve had a good-size lunch, you should be able to work out without stopping for supper, or after a very light meal. But the second cycle of the day is designed by nature not to enter into more vigorous activity but to begin to rest and relax because the body is gearing down for sleep. After the sun sets, digestion and cortisol levels go down, making it very difficult to digest a large dinner. It?s natural to start feeling a bit lethargic or even sleepy midway through this second spring period.

The hottest part of the day, when the sun is climbing to its zenith, is clearly the summer time of day. The digestive fires are being kindled and, as we have already seen, this is the ideal time to consume a meal large enough to provide fuel for the rest of the day and still be easily digested. This is not the best time for vigorous exercise; your midday meal should be followed by 5 or 10 minutes of rest, if possible lying on your left side, which supports better and more efficient digestion. If time still permits, you may then take a 5- or 10-minute walk.

In nature, the norm is to wake up with the sun and watch it rise, although few of us who don?t live on a farm ever do this anymore. We wake up with the jolt of alarm clocks or clock radios (nothing like the morning news, filled with mayhem, to start your day), and coffee to rev up our sluggish engines. The later you go to bed, the less likely you will be to see that sun rise?and every minute you lie in bed after the sun rises, you accumulate more heaviness and stiffness, and the longer it will stay with you during the day.

As in the spring season when the body is forced to burn fat, this is the time of day to mobilize your fat cells. So long as the work is not done in a panic and you breathe properly (as we will see in chapter 10), you will force the body into fat metabolism each day. If you fail to get your metabolism up in the first part of the day, the body will stay sluggish all day, leaving the fat stored and heavy. As this fat accumulates over many years, you may have more difficulty getting up and moving through the early morning blahs, and if you don?t get those fat cells burning in the morning, chances are you will burn sugar and store fat for the rest of the day. In chapter 10 I will show you some simple fat-burning exercises to start your day off right.
